Getting ready to register
Be sure to register on time so you can get the best course selection! The following steps will help you with the course registration process:
Each category of student has additional information they need to know before they register for classes. Click the link below that corresponds with your category:
Your enrolment start time is the date and exact time you can begin registering for courses. Each student has their own enrolment start time, and it is posted in My UCalgary (my.ucalgary.ca).
You can register in courses any time between the start of your enrolment start time and the registration deadline.
Additional information about a particular course can be found in the course description in the University Calendar or in My UCalgary (my.ucalgary.ca).
Many courses are reserved for students who've been admitted to a specific degree program or to a particular major. Course restrictions indicate who can register for a course, and when they can do so. During certain times you may need to wait for a restriction to expire before you can register in a course.
Here’s how you can view a specific course’s restrictions:
- Log in to your Student Centre (my.ucalgary.ca)
- Go to your Schedule Builder and find the course
- View the “Results” panel to see the course’s details
Before your register, find out which courses are required for your degree. You can do this by:
- checking the Academic Requirements (AR) tool in your Student Centre
- reviewing your degree in the University Calendar
- speaking with your program advisor
Options are courses you take that count towards your degree, but they aren't required to complete your degree. You have some flexibility when it comes to selecting your options. Choose courses that interest you, or ones that'll supplement your degree.
Some degree programs recommend you complete specific options. If this applies to your program, your recommended options will be listed in your first-year degree guide under "Courses Required in Your First Year".
When choosing options, it’s a good idea to select some alternative choices. Options can fill up quickly and you may need to register in a different class if that happens.
You’ll need to complete your registration initialization before you can register (initialization becomes available after the schedule release). To do this,
you’ll:
- Log in to My UCalgary (my.ucalgary.ca)
- Under the Home tab, scroll down to about the middle of the page and click on "Initialize Registration"; or simply click on "Enroll"
- Follow the prompts that appear on your screen
To build your course schedule, you’ll need to create a list of the required and optional courses you want to take. Make sure none of your preferred courses have any restrictions, and check to see that you’ve completed any pre-requisites.
Next, you’ll log in to My UCalgary (my.ucalgary.ca) and click on the “Schedule Builder” link so you can enter your selected courses and generate conflict-free timetable choices for each semester. You can send yourself links to the timetables you like. It’s a good idea to create a few alternate timetable options for yourself. That way you’ll be prepared if any of your desired courses are full when your enrolment start time arrives,
When you’ve made your selections, add your preferred courses to your shopping cart. They’ll stay parked there until your enrolment start time begins, and you can easily select them when you’re ready to register.
Using the “Validate” option, you can check for potential enrolment errors prior to your enrolment start time. Possible errors include time conflicts, unfulfilled pre-requisites or co-requisites, missing departmental consent, anti-requisites, and other issues.
When your enrolment start time arrives, log in to My UCalgary (my.ucalgary.ca) so you can revisit your shopping cart to register for the courses you pre-selected.
